SaaS development from idea to first release

A software-as-a-service product needs a clear problem, a defined first audience and a workable first release. We help turn those decisions into a product plan and an application people can use.

What the work can include

An engagement can include product definition, user journeys, architecture, interface design, development and testing. Hosting, operation and ongoing support are discussed and scoped separately.

Examples of where to start

These illustrative examples show the kinds of work a project could address:

  • Define the essential workflow for an early product idea.
  • Build a first release around a specific user group and core task.
  • Improve an existing product with a clearly scoped feature.

How a project can progress

We discuss the intended users and the problem, identify the smallest useful set of features, and agree on a delivery scope. The product is then built and tested in stages, with feedback informing the decisions within that scope.

Questions to consider

What belongs in a first release?

A minimum viable product (MVP) is a first version focused on the core task your intended users need to complete. Features that do not support that task can be considered for a later phase after you have more information.

How is SaaS different from internal software?

SaaS is delivered as a service to its users, while internal software primarily supports an organisation’s own work. Both can be custom-built, but their users and operating needs may differ.
